Ventura is the daughter of a Filipino father and an African-American/West Indian/Mexican mother. While attending The Williams School, a preparatory school on the Connecticut College campus, Ventura began her career as a model at the age of fourteen, appearing in ads for Delia's, Adidas, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Seventeen. When she completed high school in 2004, she announced that she was going to pursue her career in modeling and music, foregoing college.[1] [2]

In New York - where Ventura was modeling for Abercrombie and Fitch - she took classes at the Broadway Dance Center. Producer Ryan Leslie began spotting her at clubs and parties in late 2004, later saying he was charmed by her personality. She was finally introduced to him by Sean "Diddy" Combs' make-up artist, who had worked with Ventura on one of her modeling assignments.[2]

Shortly after being introduced to music producer Ryan Leslie, Ventura's mother supposedly asked Cassie to record a song for her as a birthday gift. Cassie approached Leslie, who wrote a duet for them called "Kiss Me". Leslie played the track for Tommy Mottola, who offered Ventura a management deal. Ventura inked a deal with Leslie's NextSelection label. Leslie also co-wrote and produced Cassie's first single, "Me & U", in 2005. By March 2006, Ventura had signed with Diddy's record label, Bad Boy Records.[2]

On its release, "Me & U" proved to be a massive hit - particularily in the US. It took the charts by storm, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100, number four on the Billboard Pop 100, and number one on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[2] Follow-up single "Long Way 2 Go" was far less successful in comparison, peaking at ninety-seven on the Billboard Hot 100.

Well, what do you think of it so far? We’re two-thirds of the way through The River Cottage Treatment (the final show goes out this Thursday, the 16th), and I’m delighted by the positive feedback. The shows are about my attempts to change the eating habits of various groups of dyed-in-the-wool convenience food addicts, by inviting them to spend some time with me at the new River Cottage HQ. Can they really change their ways? Well, I think we’ve shown pretty conclusively that they can.

As ever, I’ve got my critics (is it elitist and unrealistic to suggest people have to bite the bullet and pay more for good food?) and some people (River Cottage “traditionalists”?) seem to think I’m just getting a bit too serious (back to the nettle-eating competitions, Hugh) – but most agree that our look behind the scenes of the mass-produced food market is timely and apposite. We’ve even had word that some supermarkets sold out of free range and organic chicken the day after the first show aired. That’s about the best endorsement I could hope for. What do you think? We’re currently enjoying one of the most beautiful spells of autumn weather I’ve seen for a long time: day after day of clear blue skies and cold, crisp air glowing with November sunshine. It’s been a great season for mushrooms – though the first few hard frosts are bringing that to a close now. But it’s also been a bonanza year for sweet chestnuts – not only is the crop bigger than I can remember it for years, so are the individual nuts. There’s more out there than the squirrels alone can consume, and you should be able to find them, among the leaf litter on the forest floor, right through into December.

Once you’ve braved the prickly skins and retrieved the sweet little nuts inside, there are a thousand and one things you can do with them. You’ve got to cook them first, though. My preferred method is to slit the skins (to stop them exploding), then roast the nuts in the embers of a fire. I happen to have an old chestnut-roasting ladle – which looks a bit like a small frying pan with holes in – which is perfect for the job. To prepare fresh whole chestnuts for various other recipes, boil the slit nuts for about 5 minutes before peeling them. They’re fantastic ingredients for stuffings and stews, and work wonderfully in many sweet dishes too, but one of my favourite ways to use them is in a chestnut, kale and bacon soup – a lovely amalgamation of seasonal ingredients.

This is also the time of year when we have our annual pig weekend at home – and we had ours a couple of weeks back. It’s a well worn and much-loved ritual. I take a pair of good fat baconers (usually 9 or 10 months old) to slaughter, then invite family and friends to spend a couple of days helping me turn them into chops, chaps, hams, salamis, bangers and black puddings. Ray the River Cottage butcher and his wife Mary joined us this year on the Saturday, and we sat down to a lunch of just-made sausages, devilled kidneys and flash fried tenderloin, as well as some sensational air-dried ham from last years’ pig. It was a great day.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction. While it can lead to daytime drowsiness and lethargy, it can be potentially life threatening if left untreated. Find out the difference between obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. Sleep apnea

The muscles in the upper part of the throat allow air to flow into the lungs. During sleep, these muscles relax but still permit the flow of air. In some persons, this passage gets narrowed considerably and breathing becomes labored. Sleep apnea is a condition where the blockage of the airway prevents air from getting into the lungs. This leads to snoring at regular pace and short periods of time where the breathing ceases.

This is followed by sudden attempts to breathe with a loud gasp and snort. Consequently this condition affects the sleep and the person is not well rested. Besides the oxygen levels remain low leading to drowsiness and tiredness. Severe sleep apnea is likely to cause pulmonary hypertension. While sleep apnea is more likely to affect older obese men, even women can suffer from this condition.

A large neck or collar size can be one of the causes of obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can be potentially life threatening since it can cause heart attacks or strokes. The repeated episodes of disturbed sleep can leave a person drowsy and tired during the day. This can cause accidents and loss of productivity.

Diagnostic procedures to evaluate sleep apnea condition:

1. ECG to show arrhythmias during sleep

2. Echocardiogram to study the heart functioning

3. Thyroid function tests

4. Sleep studies

The goal of any sleep apnea treatment is to keep the airways open so as to prevent apneas. Patients are advised to maintain healthy body weight and refrain from consumption of alcohol or sedatives at bedtime. CPAP - continuous positive airway pressure is a form of mechanical breathing assistance. This treatment for sleep apnea involves use of a facemask worn over the nose and mouth at night.

Sleep apnea treatment

Treatment for sleep apnea can range from lifestyle modification, medication to even surgery in some cases. Weight loss and avoiding smoking are some of the changes that may need to be introduced into the lifestyle to prevent episodes of sleep apnea.

This can improve nasal breathing. Usage of CPAP is another form of sleep apnea treatment that involves wearing of a close fitting mask that creates a dilating pressure into the upper airway. This prevents snoring and sleep apnea episodes. The amount of airflow and pressure is determined by the physician.

Obstructive sleep apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder. It is caused when something obstructs the windpipe or trachea that brings air to the body. The cause of obstruction could be the tongue or tonsils or ovula. Sometimes fatty tissues might also cause obstructive sleep apnea. Persons suffering from obstructive sleep apnea complain of some of the following conditions:

Loud snoring

Daytime drowsiness

Memory loss

Limited attention

Morning headaches

Lethargy

Central sleep apnea

Central sleep apnea is a condition where the body forgets to breathe for a few seconds. This type of sleep apnea is not caused due to any obstructions and is believed to be of neurological origin. Central sleep apnea is indicated by episodes of cessation of breathing. This neurological condition may be accompanied by difficulty in swallowing, weakness and numbness throughout the body. Central sleep apnea is diagnosed by MRI and night-long polygraphic sleep monitoring. Central sleep apnea can lead to

1. Excessive daytime sleepiness

2. Irritability

3. Lack of concentration

4. Sleep deprivation

5. Increased blood pressure

6. Heart disease

Central sleep apnea is treated with drug therapy or administration of low doses of oxygen. CPAP (continuous airway pressure) is also used.

Sleep apnea surgery

Sleep apnea is often treated with surgery that removes the cause of obstruction. Enlarged tonsils or adenoids are removed to cure sleep apnea. Another sleep apnea surgery is UPPP - uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, which involves removal of excess tissue from the back of the throat. This is done to increase the size of the upper airway.

Usually it involves removal of the soft palate that hangs down the back of the throat. Such sleep apnea surgery is performed under general anesthesia. These days it is done under local anesthesia with laser assistance. Nasal reconstruction surgery straightens the nasal septum and shrinks the nasal tissue, thereby improving nasal airway. Changing the bony structure in the upper airway allows air to move more freely, especially during sleep.

Sleep apnea mask

The CPAP mask uses air pressure to push the tongue forward. This opens the throat to air, and reduces snoring and apnea. It does not cure sleep apnea but relieves the patient by preventing recurrent episodes. Personalized sleep apnea masks are created to fit exactly on your face, nose, cheeks, lips and forehead. The sleep apnea mask is secured well so that there are no leaks.

Nail Fungus

Those suffering from diabetes, circulatory problems or weakened immune system are at a higher risk of contracting nail fungus.

Nail Fungus Treatment

Treatment for nail fungus depends on the severity and type of fungal infection. For milder cases of nail fungus, topical creams such as Nizoral, Lotrimin or Lamisil will suffice. Many a time, topical medication is unable to penetrate the hard keratin layer of the nail to attack the fungus. Unfortunately, anti-fungal creams applied to the nail do not penetrate the nail bed to kill the fungus at its source and are generally ineffective. For more serious infections of nail fungus, oral medication treatment may be necessary. Lamisil is a common treatment for nail fungus. Most anti-fungal drugs need to be taken for a long stretch of time so as to eradicate the infection. But keep your physician informed if you are taking this medication. Research at the American Academy of Dermatology shows that if the nail is softened with 40% urea gel and then a layer of anti-fungal medication ciclopirox is applied to tackle the fungus. Tea tree oil has been ascribed with anti-fungal properties and is widely used in the treatment of nail fungus. Since it is a persistent condition, even after successful treatment nail fungus is known to resurface. Surgical treatment and nail debridement (removing debris and filing down thickened sections of the diseased nail) is another option for treating nail fungus.

Home Remedy for Nail Fungus

Few small precautions taken at home will help in keeping nail fungus at bay. Ensure that you keep your feet cool and dry. Choose socks made of cotton, wool or other absorbent material. If you notice any symptoms of foot nail fungus, get it examined by a doctor at once. If you experience fungal infection in any other part of your body, you might be susceptible to nail fungus too. Certain areas such as bathroom floors, locker rooms and gyms are particularly dense with fungal spores. Ensure proper hygiene and footwear while walking in these locations. A vital home remedy for those whose feet swear a lot is to use medicated anti-fungal powder. The area between the toes is most vulnerable to fungus. Scrub away dead and dry skin that is most susceptible to fungal attack. Moisturize your feet regularly to prevent cracking skin that lets fungus enter. Use an orange stick to clean under the nail tip. Avoid cutting the nails too short so as to cause cuts and tears. Treat Athlete’s foot regularly as it can progressively lead to a condition of toenail fungus. Home remedies for treating nail fungus can include topical lotions containing tea tree oil and aloe vera. While some people swear by daily application of Vicks Vaporub or Campho-Phenique, there has been on evidence to prove its efficacy in curing nail fungus.

Rethinking charitable giving

It's time to update the way you give to charity.

Americans are as charitable as they've ever been, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Last year they donated some $62.7 billion to the largest U.S. charities -- matching the highest year-over-year percentage gain in gifts since the publication started tracking those numbers 16 years ago.

But donors are different than they used to be.

The idea of just writing one check to United Way is far less popular than it once was. So is the idea of sending dozens of small checks of $15 for every group's appeal that arrives in your mailbox. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation -- created by the Microsoft chairman and his family to help reduce inequities around the world -- has inspired many to start planning their donations the way they plan their retirements.

At the same time, Congress used this year's pension legislation to tighten up the tax rules governing charitable gifts.

Starting in 2007, the Internal Revenue Service will not allow write-offs for cash donations unless they are documented. Instead of tossing cash into that Salvation Army bucket, you'll have to write a check. And remember to save your checking account statement, since your bank probably isn't sending back your canceled checks anymore.

Here's what you can do now to make sure your donations (and your tax deductions) work the way you want them to.

-- Give now, choose later with a charitable gift fund run by a mutual fund company or broker. It's significant that the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund (www.charitablegift.org/) was the sixth-biggest donation-getter in 2005, according to the Chronicle's figures.

Britney Spears filed for divorced Tuesday from Kevin Federline, officials said. The Los Angeles County Superior Court filing cites "irreconcible differences," said court spokeswoman Kathy Roberts.

Spears, 24, married rapper Kevin Federline, 28, in 2004. They have a 1-year-old son, Sean Preston, and an infant son who was born Sept. 12. The couple have not confirmed the infant's name, which is reportedly Jayden James.

At one point, it would have been hard to define Paris Hilton. "Career heiress" doesn't cut it; nor does "party girl" or "high-ranking socialite-cum-model-cum-actress," and "American royalty" was arguably too dramatic a label for a woman whose true breakout role cost less to film than a night in a budget room at the neighborhood Hilton hotel. Luckily, as lackluster economies are wont to do, the early 2000s looked toward the financial elite and borrowed heavily from Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous in hopes of creating a new rush of money envy. Enter MTV Cribs, The Osbournes, Rich Girls, VH1's The Fabulous Life, and Paris Hilton, celebutante.
Heiress of hotel guru Conrad Hilton, Paris became famous for possessing the ingredients of fame, albeit minus the resumé. As she grew skinnier, blonder, wilder, and richer, society joyfully embraced her as gossip fodder and allowed her to adopt a movie-star mystique while waiving the irksome requirement of having starred in an actual movie. This is not to say Hilton has no film credits to her name; in 2001, she landed a cameo role as herself in Ben Stiller's Zoolander and later stretched her acting chops to play a rowdy clubber in The Cat in the Hat (2003). Unfortunately for Hilton, her small role in James Cox's crime thriller Wonderland that same year was overshadowed by a larger role in an explicit homemade sex video, which her ex-boyfriend promptly sold to the salivating Internet hoards. Interestingly enough, the ensuing lawsuit and barrage of negative publicity did nothing but bolster the ratings of The Simple Life, a reality show starring Hilton and fellow heiress Nicole Richie. The series chronicled Hilton and Ritchie's reactions to the pitfalls of "simple" living, such as holding a job and shopping in outlets that don't stock haute couture. While the show could never quite decide who the novelty was -- the ridiculous rich girls or "hayseed" townsfolk -- The Simple Life was, nonetheless, a huge success.

Still basking in the warmth of paparazzi camera flashes across the globe, Paris Hilton continued looking to further her acting career. She took on her biggest role to date in 2004's Nine Lives, a straight-to-video supernatural thriller directed by newcomer Andrew Getty.

Chino is definitely not a new face to hip hop, being a member of the former group “Art of Origin” inspired by artists like LL Cool J.

Chino XL possesses a street sense encased in meaningful flows. While overcoming countless challenges he still remains ultra enthusiastic about rising to the surface of his career. Chino’s natural love for the music industry makes his passion for the game that much more concrete. This artist’s knowledge of the hip hop movement is vast which makes him an expert in the game. Being down with Africa Bam Bata and the Zulu Nation while watching the evolution of hip hop completely enforces his musical talents and credibility. His talents range from all levels of the industry from playing the piano to kicking freestyles in a cipher.

Chino XL has the flows for potential greatness. Finally he acclaims himself as being ready to be felt on the hip hop forefront. Describing his style as being “relentless” Chino XL is rising and he appears to be unstoppable. This half black half Puerto Rican rapper is gunning for the top position in the hip hop world. Don’t sleep on Chino XL. He’s silently creeping on the come up from the underground to the surface.

Thank you first of all for doing this interview. When did you decide that you wanted to make your love for hip hop into a career ?

It’s so many moments when I made that decision probably when I was little and I seen LL do it. I mean I already rhymed before that but when I really figured out that I could fit in some kind of way.

I read that you were apart of the MENSA society can you explain what that is to the Hip Hop Magazine.com family.

Wow! Basically it’s a kind of like an intellectual organization let’s say for people who are interested in educational pursuits beyond schooling. And there’s a certain caliber of intelligence that you have to have to be part of the group. Personally you know I got in because my SAT was so high.

Ok what was your score ?

Pretty close to perfect.

Wow ok. What was it like growing up in East Orange, New Jersey and do you feel that you’re growing up inspired you as an artist ?

East Orange was like one big talent show, I mean in regards to music we have so many talented people in such a small area but our talent shows were like the Apollo, you know you had Whitney Houston,( I mean she was older than us I remember seeing her at a talent show) you had Latifah, you had myself, you had naughty, you had Redman, you had lords of the underground, you had channel live, the list is so extensive in my little neighborhood, and the surrounding neighborhoods. So growing up was like being signed to Motown just to be from East Orange.

That’s a lot of talent in one place. How did the group Art of Origin come about ?

Well I was playing, I play the piano or whatever and I was playing, my Uncle Bernie bought be a dx 7, I had it hooked up by my window, so I was playing some shit probably like inspector gadget and I moved into some classical piece from that and moved into some parliament funkadelic (whatever that is) and people were walking buy, nigga’s just knocked on the door and asked my mother like yo who is playing that?
lol, then one of the guys that was in the group asked me if I could come and play some keyboard on some stuff that we got, and that’s funny because this kind of digresses back to when you asked me when I decide I wanted to make it a career. I had rhymes or whatever but I wasn’t really trying to come out with it because visually there was nobody like me beside other than Tito from the fearless 4, he was the only Puerto Rican dude that had a record out I mean he was probably 10 years older than me at the time but anyway so yeah Terry Chandler who ended up being in the group The Art of Origin asked me to play the keyboard on some stuff that they had and the dude that they had rhyming that I was playing the music over was garbage, So I spit some rhymes for him and he was like you ain’t write that and I was like yeah I did and we started the group Art of Origin from there.

How much do you feel that you have evolved since the days when you were down with African Bam Bata and the Zulu nation ?

It’s funny in a way I would say it was a devolution in a sense being so young and having your ideology being so high your level of how you think life should be is romanticized cause you know they say when you young you think you know everything, in a weird way you do you might not know everything but you think you know how you want everything to be, we did the lessons you know our women were queens, our mothers were earth and we were kings, and the center of the universe and all that and um so I’ve had to in order to work with certain people and even make music people would consider listening to I’ve had to expand from a lot of those ideologies and deal with a lot of things that I wouldn’t have even dealt with at the time I would’ve looked at them as being negative

What or who inspires your music ?

I would say anything new like if I hear a drum pattern that some trip hop group from Germany or a cadence I might hear a cadence from some mc anywhere man anywhere just kind of be like oh that’s interesting it doesn’t make me wanna do like what I heard but it makes me want to take it up a step.

That’s interesting. What are some of the misconceptions that might surround your career ?

The first thing that comes to mind is you like people like consider me like a monster, I am a monster when I’m listening to my shit, or when I am writing my shit I am a monster so it’s hard for me to not I mean steer away from that perception cause that is what that is when I’m touching the Mic, or when something is wrong, or when you know but pretty much if you met me on the humble you would see that I’m not exactly like the music would make you think that I am. And also in some ways people might have seen some projects that I was attached to as not successful there ideas and my ideas of what success should be is probably completely off target. Like I never wanted to be you know,#1 in the lime light this and that that and this where people just assume that’s where everybody wants to be so when you not there they thing you didn’t make your mark me and what I wanted to do I made every mark I wanted to. And it’s not until now that I want to take the throne away from some people that got it.

Anybody in particular...

Nah, just in order to be successful people move out the way, there’s not room for everybody so it’s like you gunning for somebody’s spot, u know you get into a spot like musical chairs and once you get out that spot somebody else sits down for whatever that time period is it doesn’t last forever till they play the next song.

What would you say was you’re most challenging obstacle and how did you get the strength to overcome it ?

I had a daughter that was born with cancer umm I’m like a super hero I work out every other day I don’t take nothing but like aspirin,(so I don’t get sore)and you know for the first time I couldn’t control it at all I couldn’t do nothing but pray and allow God to do what it is he needed to do the doctors what it is that they need to do or whatever and that was like the toughest year of my life, I thought that I had been through some shit but having a gun to your head or losing all your money, or you know or a woman breaking your heart or whatever there is there’s nothing compared to the loathing that you know you may lose you child, and you know that was the hardest thing I ever had to go through and you know were blessed they removed the tumor and she’s 100% and that time was the hardest and incidentally the time when I recorded back to basics, I was living in the hospital going back in forth.

I am so sorry. How does your family embrace your career ?

Well my family is compartmentalized you mean like my mother? Well I’ve had a lot of harsh things to say about my childhood, my mother doesn’t really, of course she can’t argue with it cause it is what it is so she’s not that fond of it, as far as people coming up to her saying her son is a genius at what he does, she likes that, So as far as my music being taken as literature she like that.

Who would you like to work with in the future ?

I got my little list but I’m trying to come outta my circle right now, umm personally I think the world wants to see a record with me and Eminem, I think the world would like to see a record with me and 50 cent, I think the world would like to see a record with me and Jay z I think it would be interesting, Never got a chance to do a song with Biggie unfortunately, never got a chance to do a song with pun so next time we talk when my album comes out you gotta say dead or living and we could have a little segment here, lol Producer wise Timberland I got a remix out her that Timberland made the beat but as far as him just making a record for me I never had it.

What does” reaching the top” means to you ?

Reaching the top to me I just want to solidify my place in history, that’s what I want to do I want people to see what I have brung to the game undeniable and I want people to say yo every time what this music is supposed to be, this yellow nigga put everything he had into it every skill, every fiber everything that he could think of he gave that shit to us, when everybody else is trying to get buy and trick us into buying they product he gave everything he had, I’m like a boxer that fights 30 rounds when everybody else is only fighting 3.

Now a 2 part question what are your goals as an artist ? What would you like to accomplish in your lifetime ?

I am gonna answer the second part first, I believe in starting everything with the end in mind, and when I first started out writing uh lyrics, for hip hop, I thought to myself that I wanted to be like a wizard that got to the point where everything that I said somebody could learn something from, someone who people want to quote and that I would be some where and people would just send people to talk to me you know what I mean, being able to explain or touch somebody through words, get them through any hard time get them through any obstacle whatever they’re trying to do I can bring something to it with something that I’ve written or something I could tell them on the spot, ok and what was the first part again

So then what are your goals as an artist ?

My goal this time around, is to really bring everything full circle, I stand in an awkward position to bring a cohesion that no one else could because you know I am half black and I grew up like a black man and I am half Latin, So I am a Latino artist I’m from the eats coast but I’ve always been considered a west coast artist so I’m bi coastal, you know I speak as a son ,I speak as a father, and I speak from so many different views that I’m the type of person that could do mostly any kind of record and not be questioned as much as another person would.

How do you handle the haters ?

I understand them, you know what I mean, I believe in no pun intended, when people cheese you can read it, when a person is coming at you talking about they don’t like this and they don’t like that you can tell where they’re coming from when you put yourself in their shoes, you know if I was the dude I wouldn’t like that either if it’s unattainable to him or threatens his existence, I understand that, the whole hater thing I see it from a completely different side of the game, I’m not gonna judge anybody for any flaws I can’t recognize in myself, I know when I’m upset about something and I’m just venting and at the same time don’t be mad at somebody for doing something that you wasn’t gonna do, If somebody samples candy girl from New Edition’s album and sells 50 million, don’t be like oh that shit is whack I could did that, you weren’t gonna play yourself like that, So if they were willing to bow down and do that, that’s them you know you was never gonna do it. So you know it’s a lesson I had to learn myself.

What influence would you say the Sway and Tech morning show had on you’re career ?

Well in the beginning it was reaffirmation on what I was doing was right, and that everything you say should be the best that it could be. Then later on right now as far as the influence now an I’m working with them in such a close way, it’s just every record is important, and what you saying with a bunch of dudes that’s just gonna be underground, when you spitting on the radio, when you spitting in a cipher, complete different tool then when you making your record that’s definitely a lesson that I learned it’s a whole other level of control.

If you could describe your style in one word, what would it be and why ?

Relentless, because when I either get on the topic or I get on a tangent like the only reason I stop is because the time ran out, or the bars ran out, or the dude in front of the pro tools fell asleep.

Alright so what can we expect from you what’s to come from Chino XL ?

For me to raise a lot of eyebrows, for me to be in places and positions that people can’t believe I got there, but don’t be surprised because I’ve had a lot of love from people in the industry, they just was waiting for me to be ready, So when you see me in videos with Paul Wall, and Mike Jones, or you see me on Jimmy Kimmel or you see me with KRS Ones, because I’ve always had relationships with these people and they always had a lot of respect for what I did, but I wasn’t trying to get pushed to the front, and now that I’m trying to get pushed to the front everybody’s like ok.

Since his career began on Nickelodeon, Nick Cannon has had a hard time breaking the shackles of his childhood success. Quietly becoming a Hollywood power player, the 25-year-old loods to get his grown man on and leave the tricks for the kids.

Nick Cannon is a proud member of the 6 o’clock club. Every morning, usually in some anonymous Los Angeles hotel room, there’s a schedule that must be followed and it begins at the ungodly hour of 6AM. Thirty minutes of meditation and prayer follow his wake-up call. Then, once his mind and soul are at ease, he works the body. He used to box in the mornings, but now a few crunches and sets of push-ups are sufficient.

After a quick shower, Cannon hops into a chauffeured Ford Excursion and heads to his production company, Mr. Renaissance, located in downtown LA. During the commute, he makes phone calls, checks his e-mails and hopes that traffic isn’t too congested so he can make it to the office by 8AM. Not the typical morning routine for your average 25-year-old, but this is a day in the life of Nick Cannon.

“I’m a businessman,” says Cannon seated in a non-descript SUV inching through New York City traffic. “I’m somebody who’s out here to get his hustle on. I think people’s minds are embedded with Drumline and Nickelodeon. The perception is, ‘Oh, my kids like him.’ I’m trying to match the perception to who I really am.”

How the public views him is one of Cannon’s biggest hurdles, making him one of the most polarizing figures in the entertainment industry. In fact, on one of the message boards for film website imdb.com there’s a post titled, “Am I the only one who doesn’t HATE Nick Cannon?” With a career comprised mostly of teen-centered cable television gigs and movie roles, Nick is often perceived as just another goofy young actor—nothing more, nothing less. His attempts to branch out into more mature arenas like hip-hop with his 2003 self-titled album and action comedies like 2005’s Underclassmen have been disastrous; fueling critics’ claims that he lacks the credibility to succeed in either genre.

“The haters will come,” says Cannon. “They’re my gauge. If people hate me, then I must be doing something right. There’s a lot of envy in the entertainment industry. So when you have somebody thinking outside of the box, and doing things their own way, people tend to be like, ‘What’s so special about him?’”

Born in San Diego, California, Cannon was raised by his mother, Beth Hackett, and paternal grandmother until the age of 10. Concerned with her son’s questionable actions like stealing from liquor stores, mom shuttled young Nick east to live with his father James Cannon, a minister residing in Charlotte, North Carolina. The rules of the house were strict: no rap music and only one hour of television per day. Since his father worked late, Nick usually stayed up watching The Arsenio Hall Show.

“I would think, ‘Damn, I wish I could do that,’” he recalls. “My father had a televangelist show on public access, and I was on that. He thought I was funny, even though I was getting the material from Arsenio.”

It wasn’t until he moved back to San Diego for high school that Cannon’s comedic aspirations started coming to fruition. As a teen, he began performing stand-up comedy locally. However, his act hadn’t evolved past the cute “yo mama” jokes he told at his father’s New Man Ministry as a preteen.

“The first night I got on stage in a nightclub, I was 15 and I tried to do my 12-year-old material. The people booed me,” he says. “I didn’t want to do it anymore, but then I realized that I couldn’t quit. I went to the library the next day and just studied different things to talk about, different impressions, and looking up humor books. The next week, I ripped it with a new set.”

Graduating from Monte Vista High School in 1998, Cannon left home for the road to work the comedy circuit full time. The experience was invaluable and helped birth the mini-mogul inside the then 18-year-old. “If you’re doing stand-up, you are executive producer of your own show,” he says. “You create, you write, you get on stage with no props, no music, no script, you just go.”

Landing a spot as a warm-up act on the Nickelodeon sketch show, All That, Cannon eventually met a member of Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment production company and scored deal for a sitcom of his own with the WB network. A pilot was shot for Loose Cannon in 2001, but the show was never picked up.

“That was my first real check,” Cannon says of the pilot. “I blew it on Range Rovers, expensive rent in the Hollywood Hills, loaning [money to] family members and I went broke. Then a year-and-a-half later I got a deal at Nickelodeon [for The Nick Cannon Show].”

Cannon parlayed his stint at the kiddie network into starring roles in two successful teen comedies, 2002’s Drumline and 2004’s Love Don’t Cost a Thing. But after playing the goofy, mischievous teenager on cable and film, the budding actor feared he was being pigeonholed and decided to take his career in a new direction. Cannon’s multimedia image makeover includes tackling more mature roles, a hit MTV variety show Wild N’ Out, and a sophomore album, Stages due out this summer via his label, Can I Ball Records. Consider it a well thought out plan by a guy who teeters between being both an artist and corporate dealmaker—but leans more towards the latter.

“Nick has a real vision of what he wants to accomplish,” says manager, Blue Williams. “He’s not a slave-driver but he’s not going to wait. If he has an idea, looks up and no one is moving on it, he’s going to take the reins himself.”

This fall, Cannon will showcase the depth of his acting chops alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins, Harry Belafonte and Demi Moore in Bobby, a historical drama recounting the assassination of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy. Written and directed by Emilio Estevez, the film finds Cannon playing one of 22 people in the vicinity of the Commander of Chief’s murder. That will be followed by The Hawk, a fight film he co-scripted and is also producing. He hopes both projects will change how casting directors and the public assess him—not to mention, erase the aftertaste of last year’s Underclassmen, which was Cannon’s first box office flop.

“Bobby gives me the opportunity to do something I haven’t done,” he says. “People are used to seeing me be funny or in a romantic comedy, but this feels like an epic. When you see my character, you don’t see Nick Cannon, you see this character. Whatever I do with business, music or comedy, I want people to know that I take my acting very seriously.”

On a sunny afternoon in New York City, Nick hops out of his tinted-windowed vehicle and into the lobby of a chic midtown Manhattan hotel. Wearing a black Adidas warm-up jacket with matching sneakers and a gaudy gold dookie rope chain, he looks like Run-DMC’s younger nephew. Once upstairs though, he makes the very non-rapper choice of eschewing the Heineken and champagne stocked mini bar for a weight-gain supplement. There’s no crew in the next room leeching off him and no blunts will be smoked here. Defying every rapper cliché, Cannon has found it difficult fitting into the world of hip-hop.

“Trying to be in the hip-hop game is probably the hardest thing you can ever imagine,” he says, sitting on the edge of his room’s kitchen counter, legs mindlessly swinging back and forth like a hyperactive kid. “You are going into a business, or a world, where it’s all about keeping it real. It’s all about how raw and gritty you are and here comes this kid from children’s television, a child star actor [who] wants to be a hip-hop artist.”

Cannon’s rap career got off to an inauspicious start in 2003 with the release of his self-titled debut album. (We’ll ignore his stint in the kiddie duo, Da Bomb Squad, which opened for Will Smith). There was the pedestrian “Your Pops Don’t Like Me,” a PG-13 version of K-Solo’s 1990 classic “Your Mom’s in My Business,” and the questionable R. Kelly collaboration “Gigolo.” “My grandmother said, ‘Ain’t that the man that had the little case?’” says Nick with a laugh. “When you think about it, it is the kid from Nickelodeon doing a record with R. Kelly.”

Despite working with Pharrell, Diddy and Kellz, Cannon’s debut sold only 200,000 copies. Apparently, skirt-chasing records were too much of a jump for the Nickelodeon set. Not even Cannon’s own label took him seriously. “Jive saw me as that Nickelodeon kid,” he says. “They even coined me in their minds as, ‘the Black Aaron Carter.’”

With his music career careening towards oblivion, Cannon decided to share more of his real life on his sophomore disc. “When I went into making this music, I was like, ‘I’m just going to do me,’” he says. “Sometimes I’ll think of a hot punch line and be like, ‘It would be crazy if I said, I carry more toasters than Sears and Roebuck’s.’ But I don’t have guns with me. You want your creativity to flow but also be as real as possible. I think that’s my lane. I’m keeping it as real as I can, being me.”

“I tell him all the time, ‘Don’t worry about street cred,’” adds Williams. “‘Kids in the ghetto respect you because you make them laugh and they know you have money. Ain’t nobody scared you going to shoot them. So what?’ He can be in a ghetto and not get robbed because cats fuck with him.”

“This one girl saw the video and didn’t get the abortion. She was pregnant with twins. This song kind of opened the door for two kids to be born. At the end of the day, no record sales could top that.”

In summer 2005, Cannon released the introspective single “Can I Live,” a tribute to his mother who at one time contemplated aborting him. The song and accompanying video were unlike anything on BET’s 106 & Park countdown. Immediately attracting controversy, it features a pregnant Tatyana Ali (best known as Ashley from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) running away from an abortion clinic. But Cannon still maintains the song wasn’t meant to be championed by either side of the heated debate.

Did you think “Can I Live” would get that much attention?

Nah, man. But by the time I was shooting the video, I knew maybe it would be controversial. People from Congress called me. The head of a pro-life foundation contacted me. They purchased 10,000 copies of the video and put them in pregnancy centers. BET embraced it but a lot of other places stayed away. Even MTV, who is supposed to be so edgy, were like, “We’re not touching it. That video is a little too risqué for us.”

Is that because the video can be seen as “pro-life” and maybe didn’t fit MTV’s political views?

Maybe. I really think it didn’t fit with the image MTV had of me at the time. This is when Wild N’ Out first started and they wanted the funny over-the-top Nick Cannon. At the same time, I’ve got a record out where I’m all serious and talking about abortion. It’s like, “We’ll wait till the next single.”

Do you feel used by the pro-life side? With those 10,000 videos, they used your video to push their agenda.

It didn’t really bother me too much. It can be interpreted any way. What really touched me was this one girl on her way to getting an abortion saw the video and didn’t get the abortion. On her first ultrasound, she found out she was pregnant with twins. That’s kind of cool. Regardless of people’s beliefs, this song kind of opened the door for two kids to be born. At the end of the day, no record sales could top that.

Cannon’s maturation both on screen and on wax is telling. Just look at the way he treats his break-up and one-sided war of words with actress/singer Christina Milian like distracting tabloid fodder.

“Our relationship was one of the more successful relationships in the public eye because we didn’t over-saturate it,” he says with a straight face. “When it did end, it wasn’t like this huge break-up. We’ll always remain friends. We’re still friends to this day. If I ever have another high-profile relationship I would probably do it exactly the same way.”

Although Milian refused to comment for this article, her record “Who’s Gonna Ride,” is believed to be a thinly-veiled stab at her former beau as she sings, “You ain’t nothing but a buster/Still I found it so hard to believe I touched ya.” Although Cannon is never called out by name, his manager believes the song is just a publicity stunt.

“The first time [Nick] heard the record he was laughing because he was like, ‘I like the beat. It’s hot.’ He didn’t trip about it,” says Williams. “It wasn’t a break-up where his heart was broken or where he felt like his world was coming to an end. They were two friends who decided that at this stage the relationship wasn’t working so let’s keep it moving.”

As the sun begins to descend into the New York skyline Cannon prepares for a late night session at Sony Studios to finish mastering his album. He’s known to micromanage his music career like one of his movie projects. “It’s almost like being the CEO of a company,” he says. “You’ve got to be involved with everything from craft services to the editing. In my projects, I really try to make sure that I produce from point A to point B to make sure that everything runs smoothly and that my vision comes across.”

But what vision does Cannon want to project? It’s tough to simultaneously be a serious actor, a clown prince of comedy, and a business-minded suit. Even harder, is the prospect of following up a serious song about abortion with a superficial ode to booties like “Dime Piece.” Despite these conflicting realities, Cannon says it’s the doubt in people’s minds that keeps his fire going.

“It’s like, ‘Can I ball?’” he asks. “I really want to let that question out.” He repeats it again for emphasis. “I really want to get that question out there. ‘Can I ball?’”

Excusing himself, Cannon hops off the counter and the dookie rope chain around his neck barely moves. Walking out the room with a confident swagger, it’s as if he’s already answered his own question. Yes, he most certainly can.

Cassandra Ventura

Cassandra Ventura, better known as Cassie, became a recording artist unexpectedly. Shortly after being introduced to music producer, Ryan Leslie, her mother requested that she record a song for her as a birthday gift. Ventura approached Leslie about producing the song, and he put together a duet for them called "Kiss Me". Leslie played it for Tommy Mottola, former chairman of Sony and record mogul behind the careers of Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and most notably Mariah Carey. He offered Ventura a management deal, and weeks later she struck a deal with Leslie to produce her debut album. She signed with Diddy's record label Bad Boy Records, after he heard "Me & U" played in a club.

We hooked up with Cassie for a brief (but lovely) chat at the Sanderson hotel in central London.

Did you ever think Me & U would be as much of a success as it is?

I didn’t think so at all, it was a demo track! The way it went I just ran with it and really put the song out there to the next level.

I’ve heard some people call you a diva but do you think you are one?

[Crazy laughter] This has happened in Germany and Sweden as well, everyone wants to know if I’m a diva! Diva and bitch can be the same thing or diva can be Beyonce which is just amazing. Right now people wanna call me a bitch because that’s the trend right now. I’m definitely not a diva; I’m very independent and speak my mind which is why I’m sometimes misconstrued. I don’t demand tea or yell at people. People think it’s crazy when I walk out of the car alone, they’re like “wait, you need someone to walk with you!”

How did it make you feel when people were putting down your performances and spreading rumours about Me & U? Do you think people are treating you a bit too harshly?

I think to be on national television, even when there are only a hundred people in front of you, there are millions watching you from their homes. It’s a scary feeling and a lot of it had to do with not being prepared. The single had become so big and I wanted to be just as big as the single and not upset anybody, it was a lot of pressure. Everybody was really supportive and now the negative has helped me improve my performances.

Do you find it find to meet guys now that you’ve found success?

It can be hard but the thing is it would be too difficult to have a boyfriend right now. It’s hard to make somebody understand the situation. I’ve just got a new apartment and I haven’t been there more than two or three days at a time. Hopefully I’ll find my prince one day!

I hear you have some tattoos, what do they mean to you? Did they hurt when you got them done?

[Show me her tattoos] I have one on my wrist saying “No Regrets” which I got done after I signed my deal with Bad Boy, I have several others which I can’t show you as well! There’s also a dragon on my ankle which only hurt a bit but I guess I take pain pretty well.

Do you ever get annoyed when people say you’ve only made it this far because of the people you know?

People can say all they want but I’m been in the entertainment industry since I was twelve years old, I’m now twenty so it’s been a good eight years. Ryan did have a lot to do with it because he helped on the album and Tommy Mottola is my manager so of course he’s involved in my career. It’s all how you work with people, your attitude and working the room. I’ve had great help but I’ve had to find the help at the end of the day and make it work for me.

How did you make the transition from modelling to singing?

It was ultimately working with Ryan. It was hard and exciting deciding whether I was going to make the transition or not. I knew other producers in high school but at that time it didn’t work out. When the situation came up again I was a little weary about it risking my job for something that might not work out.

What do you like doing when you have some free time to yourself?

Just hang out with my friends and doing normal things. While I’ve been in London I’ve met up with one of my best friends and I love shopping. I actually went to TopShop, I hope we get one in New York. Ryan went to Selfridges but I haven’t been there yet.

You’ve had millions of hits on MySpace, how did you do that?

People like Mary J. Blige don’t work on their MySpace but I do. I try to make it interesting for people to look at with different video clips and articles about what’s going on. I replied to mail when I started the MySpace and built up a lot of excitement, then people put the song on their own pages which started a chain.

The next single is “A Long Way 2 Go.” What’s that about? It sounds like you’re talking about a really foolish guy!

How did it make you feel when people were putting down your performances and spreading rumours about Me & U? Do you think people are treating you a bit too harshly?

I think to be on national television, even when there are only a hundred people in front of you, there are millions watching you from their homes. It’s a scary feeling and a lot of it had to do with not being prepared. The single had become so big and I wanted to be just as big as the single and not upset anybody, it was a lot of pressure. Everybody was really supportive and now the negative has helped me improve my performances.

Do you find it find to meet guys now that you’ve found success?

It can be hard but the thing is it would be too difficult to have a boyfriend right now. It’s hard to make somebody understand the situation. I’ve just got a new apartment and I haven’t been there more than two or three days at a time. Hopefully I’ll find my prince one day!

I hear you have some tattoos, what do they mean to you? Did they hurt when you got them done?

The owner of an etiquette business who was handed a plastic bag supposedly containing feces in the hit movie Borat says she was told the filming would be used for a documentary in Belarus.

Cindy Streit said she filed a complaint Thursday with California Attorney General Bill Lockyer, requesting an investigation into possible violations of the California Unfair Trade Practices Act.

Streit said that a representative from a Los Angeles-based company called Springland Films contacted her Birmingham, Ala.-company, Etiquette Training Services, about arranging an etiquette session for an "international guest from Belarus Television."

Attempts to find a contact for Springland were not successful. The company had no phone listing and Streit's lawyers declined to provide copies of the contracts allegedly signed.

The attorney general's office had not received a copy of the complaint, spokesman Nathan Barankin said late Thursday.

Streit said she arranged in Alabama both a sit-down session with Borat, played by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, and a dinner party with some of her friends. Clips of both appear in the movie Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit of Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

Though awkward at times, Streit said the dinner went well until Borat asked to use the bathroom.

"I had taught him to excuse himself. He did that correctly and went upstairs," Streit told The Associated Press. "The next thing that happened is that he came down the stairs holding this plastic bag with whatever was in it."

"My horror was that he had brought a bag of feces to my dinner table," she said.

Springland put in writing that the second of two scheduled sessions "will be filmed as part of a documentary for Belarus Television and for those purposes only," said Gloria Allred, Streit's lawyer.

Streit, 59, said she requested an investigation by the attorney general instead of filing a lawsuit in hopes of setting a precedent that will make movie studios think twice before using other ordinary citizens for "reality movies." However, she said she wouldn't rule out a lawsuit.

A handful of people who appear in the movie have filed lawsuits or made complaints.

Am I the only one who finds it tough to tell the difference between a song by Shakira, and anything sung by the Gypsy Kings? Over 4th of July weekend, as many of you already know, Jeanna and I went down to the Taj Mahal casino and put $40 in and came out with $230. We put it towards a small aluminum fishing boat, which we've already gotten some excellent use out of. Ventura was born in New London, Connecticut.Her father is Filipino and her mother is African American. Cassie attended the preparatory Williams School on the Connecticut College campus in New London, graduating in 2004. Cassie is best known for her single "Me & U", which is ascending the Billboard charts.

Ventura became a recording artist unexpectedly. Shortly after being introduced to music producer, Ryan Leslie, Cassie's mother requested that she record a song for her as a birthday gift. Ventura approached Leslie about producing the song, and he put together a duet for them called "Kiss Me". As it turned out, Ventura's mother wasn't the only one who loved the song. Leslie played "Kiss Me" for Tommy Mottola, former chairman of Sony, and the record mogul behind the careers of Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and most notably Mariah Carey. He offered Ventura a management deal, and weeks later she struck a deal with Leslie to produce her debut album. She signed with Diddy's record label Bad Boy and Recordings, after he heard the track "Me & U" played in a club.

Before the launch of her music career, Ventura was a fashion model for the Wilhelmina modelling agency, where she worked with Adidas, Complex magazine and Abercrombie & Fitch campaigns, among others. Eingeweihten dürfte CASSIE zumindest optisch schon bekannt sein: Sie modelte für Missy Elliotts „Respect Me“-Linie und spielte die Hauptrolle in Marios Single-Clip zu „Here I Go Again“. Producer Ryan Leslie entdeckte CASSIE in einem Club und traf sie im Winter 2004 auf Diddys Birthday-Bash wieder. Ein Geburtstagslied für ihre Mutter war dann der Auslöser für CASSIE, mit Ryan zum ersten Mal in ihrem Leben ins Studio zu gehen. Und nicht nur ihre Mutter war begeistert – so nahmen die Dinge ihren Lauf...

Der große Durchbruch für CASSIE kam allerdings über das Internet, und speziell über das legendäre Musikforum MySpace.com. „Zuerst lief der Song nur auf MySpace,“ erklärt die Sängerin, die in New London, Connecticut, geboren wurde und nach der High School statt aufs College lieber ins Showbusiness in New York ging. „Von da ging er dann ins Radio, bis er im ganzen Land gespielt wurde.“ Aber noch etwas anderes passierte: Über MySpace sickerte Me & U in die Clubs nach Europa und wurde speziell in Deutschland ein massiver Underground-Clubhit - lange vor der Veröffentlichung in den USA. Und man kann sicher sein, dass die große CASSIE-Welle hierzulande noch ins Rollen kommt.

Das Video zum Track drehte niemand geringeres als Ray Kay, der CASSIE im beeindruckend stylishen Setting eines alten New Yorker Lofts platzierte. Optisch sowie tänzerisch atemberaubend in Szene gesetzt, gibt CASSIE mit dem Clip eine stilprägende Vorlage für R’n’B-Videos einer neuen Generation.

In August 2006, an unreleased version of the video for Cassie's song "Me & U" appeared on YouTube, a popular video sharing website. In stark contrast to the more polished video that was shown on mainstream media outlets like MTV and BET, the original version depicts Cassie singing to an unidentified male (represented by the camera) before taking him home, presumably to engage in sexual intercourse. Latter scenes of the video depict Cassie caressing his genital region and then unbuckling his pants. She also dances around in a bra and panties while her companion videotapes her on a handheld camcorder. On her NS4LIFE Journal, the singer denounced the earlier video saying that it was "low budget" and "scarred the beginnings for a very bright future." She also said that she made the second version "clean" to preserve her "name and image."

Cassie is currently being questioned about her vocal ability after performances on TRL and 106 and Park. There is currently a petiton going around on the internet begging Diddy to drop Cassie from Bad Boy Records immediately.

As with so many models, Cassie wanted more. So, a few years back, an industry connection introduced her to the producer Rockwilder. He suggested Cassie take vocal lessons.

Cassie got further after mutual friends introduced her to producer Ryan Leslie, who had connections to P. Diddy's Bad Boy label. She signed to Leslie's production company last year, and, savvily, the two set up a Myspace site to expose their demos, including "Me & U." "I answered every E- mail that came in. I really got into it," Cassie says.

The site took off - to the point where deejays started playing the song from the demo alone. Eventually, that inspired the usual bidding war among labels. Diddy's Bad Boy won out.

His label needs the hit badly. Having lost smash acts like Faith Evans and 112, Bad Boy's only score of late has been through it's Southern division, thanks to Yung Joc. The imprint may advance the turnaround next week, once Cassie's self-titled debut album hits stores.

Cassie's disk benefits from a uniform sound. Leslie produced every track. While the disk takes detours to new wave rock, it's mainly bubblegum R&B, with a splash of synth-pop tossed in. The album's lyrics hone a sex-kitten persona for Cassie, a role she calls "my alter ego. It's really not me."

The candid singer is the first to admit that, vocally, she's "no Aretha Franklin." But Cassie can do a decent Janet Jackson. And so long as summer lasts, there's no need for her to do much more.

Bubblegum R&B with a splash of synth-pop

There's not a lot going on in the song - just a blip of a synth line, a tap of a beat and a voice as light as a lemon drop.
But clearly that's enough to have made "Me & U" one of the summer's defining singles.

This week "Me & U" hopped all the way to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (on the Pop Song list it's No. 3). The success surprised the song's mono-named singer, Cassie, as much as anyone.

"It's a really robotic song, with pretty much one note going all the way through," the 19-year-old admits. "At first I thought, 'How am I going to perform this?' I didn't expect it to go anywhere."

Then again, summer calls for the shedding of sounds as well as clothes. And there's no denying that "Me & U" has the same irresistible minimalism as an equally hot smash from last year: Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot."

There's also the teasing appeal of its lyric to consider. It presents Cassie as the sexual aggressor. "I'll love you all the way down/get you right where you like it," she purrs. "I promise you'll like it."

At least it's likely her object will like her looks. Like many modern singers, Cassie's entry into the recording world didn't come about by anything as old-fashioned as singing. She started out - you guessed it - as a model, appearing in campaigns for Abercrombie & Fitch, Adidas and Delia's.

The woman born Cassandra Ventura (whose gene pool draws from Mexico, the Philippines and the West Indies) did some singing as a child growing up in New London, Conn. But her first break came as a Wilhelmina mannequin at age 15.

Ich hatte mir schon immer gewünscht live bei einem Konzert von Christina dabei zu sein. Leider hatte ich nie die Chance dazu, was sich hoffentlich bald ändern wird.
Meine Freunde schenkten mir daher als Trost die DVD. Ich freute mich darüber, sah es aber als herausgeschmissenes Geld, da ich mir DVD's grundsätzlich nicht kaufe, da ich sie nur einmal sehe.
Nun... ich denk ich hab die DVD schon an die 20 mal gesehen und hab sie nun 2 Monate. Christina hat mich überzeugt auch wenn ich nicht live dabei war. Sie singt live, hat tolle Outfits und liefert eine klasse Performance.
Die Extras sind interessant könnten aber meiner Meinung nach etwas mehr sein. Sind aber in Ordnung.
Ich selbst habe die DVD dauerhaft im Player und lasse sie zwischendurch immer wieder laufen, da ich es einfach besser finde Christina live zu hören als auf ihrer Stripped CD, die aber auch weltklasse ist.
Also diese DVD ist sicher kein Fehlkauf, da sie nach einmaligen Ansehen bestimmt nicht in der letzten Schublade landen wird. Christina überzeugt einfach immer.

R&B singer Cassie got her first taste of the music industry at 16 when she had the opportunity to speak with the producer Rockwilder, a meeting that inspired her to take formal voice lessons. This decision paid off nicely later on, when, after she'd graduated from high school and was working on her modeling career in New York, she became acquainted with producer Ryan Leslie. Oliver Stone’s 1983 cinematic classic Scarface was a fraud—for the most part. Not the film’s message, that living by the gun and sniffing a Costco amount of coke will eventually lead to one’s demise, but the character of Tony Montana was far from realistic. Al Pacino’s infamous performance forever vilified Cuban immigrants in the minds of American audiences as criminals. Very few people remember Montana’s humble beginnings as a dishwasher in the early stages of the film. According to Cuban-Americans like Miami-based MC Pitbull, that image was more in line with the average cubano living in Florida during the ’80s. Before any outsider can truly understand the dynamics of these Cuban immigrants, they must first know the history.

It all began with a car crash on April 1, 1980. The driver was seeking asylum and rammed his vehicle through the gates of the Peruvian embassy in Havana, which caused immediate pandemonium among the people. By the time President Fidel Castro pulled security from the area, around 10,000 Cuban citizens demanded to leave the Communist island. Although the defiance angered “El Caballo,” he agreed to open the doors to anyone that wanted to leave on April 20th. There was a catch though. Along with the initial 10,000 people seeking refuge, Castro tossed in what he called “undesirables.” For the most part, they were comprised of political prisoners, homosexual artists, religious sectarians like Jehovah’s Witnesses, the mentally disabled and some of the most violent criminals Cuba had to offer. Castro, along with the US media, labeled the approximate 125,000 refugees as Marielitos, a name derived from Cuba’s Port of Mariel where most of them left the island country. No one wanted them. Not even US-residing Cubans.

“Castro’s a bully. He bullies his people. He basically does whatever the f**k he wants to do. I have no respect [for] Castro.” —PITBULL

“There was a lot of racism towards Marielitos within the Cuban community. Oh, tu ere un Marielito, no te puedo dar trabajo aqui. (Oh, you’re a Marielito. I can’t give you work). But we overcame that,” says Pit, whose sophomore album is named El Mariel in honor of that struggle. “There weren’t really a lot of opportunities for Latinos. Of course, you’re gonna have your bad batch, but at the end of the day [Marielitos] have done a lot for Miami. The city grew real quick as soon as the Marielitos came. They were movers and shakers. They were making it happen out there any way they had to.”

It’s one thing to be discriminated against by another race, but to be disliked by your own people can be devastating. Cubans who came to the States prior to 1980 were predominantly White professionals. Once rumblings of Marielitos being Castro’s castoffs hit Florida, these same Cubans viewed the new crop as a threat to their pristine image.

“Because Cubans had already established a well-oiled community in Miami, they were viewed as the model minority,” says Prof. Alan Aja of Brooklyn College’s Puerto Rican and Latino Studies department. “Half of the established community wanted to help the Marielitos, but the other half were upset because they didn’t want to be associated with los Marielitos because they were seen as ‘undesirables.’ The media was casting them as these low-skilled Black workers and because of how racist this country is, [some] Cubans wanted to pass for White. Their Whiteness was access for them.”

White America, along with biased Cubans, was convinced that Marielitos would inundate Miami with crime. An opinion further propagated by films like Scarface, where Montana’s version of the American dream includes drugs, murder and violence.

“A lot of the cats that came over in El Mariel were called escoria (scum), you know, the bottom of the barrel,” says Pit. “A lot of them came from prisons and mental institutions but there were a lot of good people too. I’m sure a lot of those cats that were criminals turned their lives around into a positive. Of course, you had the whole Cuban crime wave—the Miami Vice, Scarface, the cocaine but eso viene con todo (that comes with everything). To everything there’s a positive. To everything positive there’s a negative.”

During the early ’80s, Marielitos experienced some of the worst discrimination Latinos have ever faced in this country. According to a September 1983 report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Miami Beach City Commission approved an ordinance that gave the police the authority to inspect the homes of people who were willing to sponsor the citizenship of Cuban refugees from federal prison. A little over a year later, many of those Marielitos were becoming legal residents and rumors of them sponsoring a half million more Cuban immigrants scared the American public.

“The Marielitos were racialized and ostracized by the Cuban government, Cuban exilic leaders and the mainstream media because they represented the present-day Cuba as opposed to the mostly White, high-skilled elites who arrived in the 1960’s,” says Prof. Aja. “The Marielitos were relatively low-skilled political prisoners, artists, gays and up to 40 percent were of African descent.”

Most of the fear and discrimination many Marielitos faced was unfounded. According to a 1980 edition of the Monthly Labor Review, which gathers INS reports, 84 percent of these refugees didn’t even have prison records in Cuba. Furthermore, most of those serving sentences were imprisoned for crimes that wouldn’t be penalized in the States—like stealing food rations or clothes. Due to the constant marginalization, specifically of Black Cubans, many wound up settling in non-Cuban communities.

“A lot of the Black Marielitos ended growing up among African-American and Haitian communities or leaving Miami altogether because of the racism,” says Prof. Aja. “Cubans like to say that there is no racism here [in the States], but there’s racism in Cuba. I don’t think that’s ever been true. You’ve always had White Cubans hating Black Cubans [in America].”

Therein lies the significance of Pitbull naming his album El Mariel. Marielitos were predominantly portrayed as Afro-Cubans and stereotypically classified as no-good bums; Pit is neither. As a light-skinned cubano, he could easily turn his back on the plight of his darker-skinned brothers and sisters; instead, the Miami rapper embraces Black culture in all its forms.

“I haven’t read or heard Pitbull’s lyrics or music,” Prof. Aja confesses. “But based on the title of his album, his identification with the racialized stigma of the Marielitos—especially as an artist in a historically Black art form—can be seen as either embracing Blackness or at the same time be seen as an example of the further ghettoization of peoples, music and culture, in the US.”

“The reason I chose that title was because [the Port of] Mariel was a quest for freedom,” explains Pit. “It shows triumph and making something out of nothing. My family was brought through it as well and I’m a product of that.”

The child of Marielito parents, Pitbull was almost born on one of the boats traveling to Florida from Cuba’s Port of Mariel. Taking his first breath on American soil, Pit grew up in an era when Miami was still on the cusp of becoming a booming city. There was, however, a thriving crime scene as well.

“I was a very young kid when the Marielitos came in and had their crime wave,” says the 25-year-old born Armando Christian Perez. “My mother was like, ‘I don’t want you going out. I don’t want you getting into trouble.’ Miami at the time was full of drugs and people just trying to get it.”

At the advice of his parents, Pitbull kept himself busy by memorizing the poetry of Cuban revolutionary José Martí. After that, the transition to writing his own lyrics came easy. Becoming a lyrical force in MIA’s underground battling scene, he signed with TVT Records in 2003 and released his gold-selling debut, M.I.A.M.I. (Money Is A Major Issue) a year later. Despite all his triumphs, Pit admits that it’s still tough for a Latino MC to make it in a world of predominantly Black artists and White label execs. Aside from Fat Joe, there aren’t many prominent Latinos in the world of hip-hop today. Sure, Big Pun broke barriers as the first solo rapper of Spanish decent to go platinum, but since his death in 2000, it seems like the door has been bolted shut for other Latino artists.

That may soon change thanks to the efforts of Sean “Diddy” Combs. Last year, the hip-hop mogul announced plans to launch a Bad Boy Latino imprint with Pitbull serving as the A&R. Although the label has yet to fully get off the ground, Pit hopes to do his part to help increase the presence of his people in hip-hop. In fact, a few weeks after the summer release of El Mariel, he’s putting out a Spanish-only version of the album—a first for a mainstream MC.

“I did a couple of tracks on El Mariel that are straight Afro-Cuban—straight percussion,” says Pit. “I got a live ritual going on. Praying to the god Chango and all that. I chopped it up and made a record out of it. It’s called ‘Ya Se Acabo (It’s Over).’ People just got a misconception of Pitbull. They’re like, ‘Oh is he reggaeton? Is he crunk? Is he that?’ Nah, he does music.”

While Pitbull continues to make major moves in the States, he constantly thinks about his homeland and its controversial figurehead. Many critics feel that Castro has slowly derailed from his revolutionary ideals since the 1967 execution of his comrade in arms Che Guevara. Once the jewel of the Caribbean, Cuba has become a place where many Cubans would much rather visit than live.

“Castro’s a bully. He bullies his people. He basically does whatever the fuck he wants to do,” says Pit flatly. “I have no respect [for] Castro. What he did to our people, our culture. The only thing that he did that turned into a positive is the way he made us move and get off the island and we had to learn another culture, another language which only made us stronger.”

In spite of their dictator, many Marielitos and their children have come to embody all of the elements of the American dream. Take Pitbull for example. He’s a successful rap star and a budding record exec. He has helped reggaeton crossover, solidified Latinos’ place in mainstream hip-hop and made it acceptable to be an artist who’s not afraid to speak his mind.

“All I’ve been looking for is respect in the game,” says Pit. “Now that I’ve touched down and the game let me in it’s time to take full advantage of it, like the Marielitos did in Miami. Yes, some were criminals, some came from a negative background but you have those who became politicians, lawyers, judges, and doctors, you name it. Now that I got my foot in the door it’s time to take opportunities like the Marielitos did.”

Franklin was born in Memphis. The family lived in Buffalo, New York for a short time before moving to Detroit, Michigan when she was seven. Aretha's mother, Barbara (a gospel singer), left the family when Aretha was only six years old, and later died.

As a child, Franklin and her sisters, Carolyn and Erma, sang at her father's Detroit-area church and made her first recordings at the age 14. One of their two brothers, Cecil, became a minister like their father, but was also Aretha's manager for a time. Their other brother, Vaughn, became a career Air Force pilot.

Aretha signed with Columbia Records after being discovered by legendary A&R man John Hammond. In the early 1960s, Franklin had a few popular songs, most notably "Rock-a-bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody." Though Columbia really wanted her as a jazz singer, the results never gave full rein to Franklin's talents. Her greatest and most innovative work was yet to come.

Franklin had her first two sons around this time. Clarence, Jr. was born when she was 15 and Edward "Eddie" was born when she was 16. She dropped out of high school soon after the birth of her second son. Her grandmother took in her sons to help Aretha move on in her career.

After moving to Atlantic Records in 1967, Franklin teamed up with producers Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin, resulting in some of the most influential R&B recordings of the 1960s, including "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)", a much more soulful and impassioned song than most of her earlier work. By the late 1960s, Franklin had earned the nickname "The Queen of Soul", having become an internationally famous artist and a symbol of pride for the Black community. Franklin said herself of this period, "When I went to Atlantic, they just sat me down at the piano and the hits started coming."

She released numerous Top Ten hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s, dabbling in gospel music, blues music, pop music, psychedelic music and rock and roll, including notable covers of songs by The Beatles ("Eleanor Rigby"), The Band ("The Weight"), Simon & Garfunkel ("Bridge Over Troubled Water"), Sam Cooke and The Drifters. Live at Fillmore West and Amazing Grace were two of her most influential full-length releases. Her band for the former included musicians King Curtis, Bernard Purdie and Billy Preston; the latter was a double LP of live gospel music recorded in a Los Angeles Baptist church. Surprisingly she never made it to number one in the UK pop charts — the best result being a number four with her version of Burt Bacharach's "I Say a Little Prayer" in 1968.
